CAL 35

Last Review Posted CAL 35
The Cal 35 II's were produced between 1980 and 1984. Less than 100 were made. They are a Lapworth design which was favored as being a very well performing cruising boat. Two keel choices were offered, a 5' or a 6'. The 6 is bound to point a bit higher. These boat perform very well. She'll usually be in the middle of the fleet if you are PHRF'ing, but get a windy day and she'll beat the J 30's upwind. The amount of storage and thought put into construction of this boat are both consderable. Where else do you find a 35 footer with a separate shower from the head?? The 2 cabin choices were to have a quarter berth on the starboard side behind the nav station, or to have a closet and cabinet. The latter version in turn leaves a large starboard cockpit locker with great battery/engine access. Access to nearly everything else is super. Water tanks (~90 gallons combined) can be removed in 10 minutes, and the fuel tank likewise can be removed in about 20. There is a lot of teak in the interior. There is a large anchor locker with great deck access. Most did not come with self-tailing winches, so I have upgraded there. The thickness of the coaming negates the need for winch backing plates, but large washers are recommended. Kenyon mast and booms are the standard, with the stays set up enough inboard to allow fairly tight trimming of the jib. A great website with all kinds of information on sailboats in general is and it contains all of the pertinent info on the second generation of the CAL 35. Practical Sailor Magazine also has done a review of the boat.
