Prior to the purchase of my DE 32 I owned a West Sail 32, a Hunter 30 and Irwin 35 and a Morgan 35. Each boat with a differnt purpose and sailing venue. The DE 32 and West Sail are in the same catagory - heavy blue water cutter rigged sail boats. The DE 32 is not a day sailor or light coastal boat designed for a quick trip to the Bahamas from Fort Pierce - unless the you happen to be traveling when the Gulf Stream unexpectedly kicks up against a 25 knot breeze. If that happens be happy you are sailing a DE 32. The DE 32 has more interior space than the West Sail and does not hobby horse like the double ender W 32. Points well and will travel at hull speed 6.4 knots in 15 + knots of breeze. But it is not a day sailor or fair weather sailor - it will not circumnavigator at record speed but it will certain to return you to home after a circumnavigation

I bought hull #1 last fall and I love it so far. I'm new to sailing so I cant compare how it performs with other boats.

I sail one in Mazatlan, it has proven to be safe at sea, but since they are old boats need to be revised on all aspects before sailing on the coast. It has positive flotation which makes it even safer. I once got caught on a swell, the centerboard broke at the marina entrance( it had some prev. damage i guess), and the boat surfed on a huge wave with no control on the rudder slaming the boat on the sea wall at about 6 knots. It had severe damage to the bow but kept pasengers safe and dry all the way back to the slip. We now sail every weekend on but had to restore and repair several things to keep the boat safe and seaworthy.

very fast when wind is up -- no need to reef until 20 knots apparent - 7.5 knots @ 17 knots apparent

Purchased 09/1991. For the past 22 years have had nothing but great sailing with her! Maine to Fla. Outside and ICW. 6'6" headroom, fully loaded, 12 ft beam, 5'6" draft. Mine is a 37S built 1985. Sleeps 6, Better than any like performance racer/cruiser. Solid construction, Low maintenance.
