Great daysailor and weekender for two or 3. Fast, planing hull with kickup centerboard and rudder. Draws less than 1 food with all up. Positive floation all but eliminates possibility of sinking though that's NOT much of a problem: Even with the centerboard and full sails up including a 160 genny, she all but refuses to get knocked down and the two times we've done so, she spun around into the wind and uprighted herself before we could think of doing anything. We've covered 8.5 nautical miles in one hour and seen 11 knots for short periods on a reach.

Great boat. I have it now (8/00) about 8 months and have had it out 14 times. We have 3.5 hp outboard which seems to take care of all of our needs. Have trailered it from NJ to Charlestown,SC and had no problems. Went NYC harbor for OPSail 2000 on 4th of July 2000. I have no handling problems. Have had it in 30 + winds and have never had a knock down. Boat runs out of rudder before you get a chance to knock it down. I have had up to 8 people.. mostly kids but is a good day sailer for up to 6 people. Too small to overnight in. Will probably sell and move up to a larger Mac next year. Installed Hummingbird 100 sx and saturn bulkhead mount compass. had to upgrade electrical, and paint interior. No major problems in 14 times out approx 250 miles. Touted as the quickest of the Mac line, the 21 is small boat that sails BIG. Easy to trailer and launch, the M21 sets up quickly and handles well in all wind conditions. Abet small inside, there is plenty of room for 2 adults to overnight and more if you modify the cockpit and add a double-sized air mattress. My M21 has a 4hp OB that provides plenty of push for inland lake sailing (Carlyle Lake, Illinois). The MacGregor line of boats is maybe the easiest to sail and the 21 is an excellent starter sailboat. The MacGregors are also near the bottom of the list for expense, so owning my 21 is very easy.
I've modified my Mac 21 by adding jiffy reefing, battery charger + thru hull adapter, cabin vents, storage nets, boom vang, windex, bulkhead compass, topping lift and other assorted gear and storage hardware.
