Pros: Quick, responsive, dynamite downwind
Cons:

A Canadian west coast success story, with up to 200 built and a new builder (Dencho) starting to produce them again in California.

This agile 24 footer is a round-the-bouys dream. The fractional rig, large main, 3 sail limit (no genoas or overlapping jibs) simplify handling.
Displacement of approx 2500 lbs and around 900 ballast in a narrow chord lead keel combined with a deep balanced rudder makes her very responsive, and as boat speed climbs into the teens on a hot downwind run, she drives beautifully.
A one-design in the looser sense of the term - while boats are identical, there are variations in track placement and lead adjustments allowed.
Running rigging is nicely sized and adequate to the task. The small jib really makes a long beat a joy especially when fleet racing similar sized boats with genoas and sail changes. The ability to shift gears smoothly through the wind range is a huge advantage in changing conditions. Quick acceleration in the lightest airs made us the envy of many a 40 footer in club races. When the breeze is up there are few boats outside the newer sportboat lines that can touch it.
Easily crewed with 4, we raced for many years with two plus two teenaged boys. In the big breezes a 5th helps for ballast, but the boat gets crowded.
While not broach-proof, she at least gives some warning as the rudder starts to detach before giving up altogether. The alert helmsman can usually dive deep and avoid a crash.
This class in its heyday put 50+ boats on the line at the "Intergalactics" in Vancouver and still today has fleets in BC, California, Japan and Texas. 242s enjoy success in fleet handicap racing too, especially if any seriously windy downwind legs are involved. Rating 168 on the west coast, it is not difficult to maintain placings amongst similar rated boats.

Owned one for 15 years, sailed it lots, had a winning record and sold it for what we paid - not bad!
