I saw there was no review on this site so I couldn't resist. I have hull #1 of the Mason 43 built in 1979 (not the original owner). I am doing a major refit, so I am pretty familiar with the construction and systems, but have no experience sailing her. I had a Cheoy Lee Offshore 40 in the Caribbean for 10 years prior. I am now in Mexico.
I am very impressed with the quality of construction, the layout, the interior joinery, the beauty of the lines, and the seaworthy design. When we owned the Cheoy Lee, the Mason 43 was the only other boat that we agreed that we would prefer to own.
The only design flaws that I have encountered are the placement of the traveler on the aft edge of the cabin top, which makes the proper installation of a dodger very problematic. My solution is to install a low profile traveler on the bridge deck at the edge of the cockpit. Then I will install two split dodgers to protect the watch crew and the companionway.
My other design complaint is that they had installed siphon breaks in a location that I could not access to service them. They were behind a cabinet that held a pullman sink. My solution was to remove the sink that I was not using and rebuild the cabinet so that I could easy disassemble the shelves and climb in to service the plumbing. This may have been addressed on later hull#s as I have seen pictures of other Masons with closets in this location.
I will be glad to help in anyway I can - rdtaylor@frontier.net
