I have sailed my First 24 in the Irish sea for some time and have found her to be a good compromise between accomodation and good sailing performance. The lift keel gives her a draft of 2'6" (up) and approx 6' down. The fractional rig is very easy to manage even when short crewed with all lines commonly led aft except the reefing lines that cleat at the boom near the tack of the main. The boat is very dry and I can remember no occassion when water has entered the companionway other than on clothing. My boat has the Honda 7.5 (4 stroke) that has proved sufficiently powerful to drive her against 5 knot currents and at 2/3 revs the engine uses approx 1/4 (0.25) gallons hour. The boat is often charged as a 24 footer by vertue of her name and has thus saved us many a pound in marinas. The double stern cabin is a great plus point when sailing as two couples with others who are not used to the lack of privacy often associated with sailing. It is unjust to criticize this boat in view of their size and the market they were aimed at but the things I would look for in another boat (for longer distance cruising) are:- 1) more storage space for fenders,tenders etc. 2)An electric start inboard diesel engine (my wife finds the engine start heavy, diesel is cheaper, The battery charging is limited to 5 amps on the Honda. 3)Deeper internal lockers. 4) A more accessible wet locker 5) A hatch that does not slide all the way up to the mast foot. (Though this is great in port it is not easy to store a dinghy on the coach roof without blocking it. 6) The mooring cleats at the stern are situated next to a section of the rail with a sharp edge. This must be modified before it causes damage to your warps. 6) The stantion bases are poor. The originals being plastic may be replaced with new alloy ones at some cost. Certainly the plastic ones would not be strong enough to restrain an adult falling against them. - Whilst this sounds like a lot of faults the boat has many!
more plus points - It is legal (just) to trail one at 1.88 tons. They sail very well, pointing up wind well and maintaining hull speed in anything from a Force 3 The accomodation for the size of boat is unparalleled.
