The Sanibel 17' is a good sailor. At 12'' draft with the board up, it will go in to thin water. In light air it will even tack with the board up, as it has a skeg. The boat is well balanced and can be set up to weather helm, lee helm or self steer for short periods. It ghosts very well and will sail in twenty knots of wind without reefing. It does heel very sharply in stiff breeze but settles on her lines and never feels out of control.

A good, forgiving, shoal draft centre boarder for those who appreciate gunk-holing. The port settee is wider than starboard, because the centreboard is off-centre-- hidden in the side of the port berth. IMHO, the excentric C/B does not alter performance on either tack. For a small boat, there is a lot of storage, especially below the V-berth (which is more of a kid-platform than anything.) The boat motors well with a 4 hp longshaft, and when you tip it up a 3-foot dowel for a depth sounder will let you into paper-thin water. Handy additions are an anchor hanger on the pulpit and a downhaul for the fairly lightweight jib.

I owned a Sanibel 18 briefly. I really did not like the boat. It does not have a backstay, so fine tuning the mast is not possible. I always had severe lee helm. If the tiller is let go the boat will eventually gybe. The boat is also very light and not a particularly good performer. I would not recommend this boat.

The Sanibel 17 is a good craft for the beginning sailor. She is very easy to trailer, step the mast and launch. Like the rollie-Pollie she rights herself when the sheets are loosed. Lots of fun for the layed back, non racing types who enjoy a restful day

Big beamy cabin and small sail area (150sq ft) make sailing close into the wind is near impossible.

We bought our boat, with 4 hp motor and trailer for $ 4,000.00 in good condition and have sailed her in Tampa Bay, the Gulf of Mexico and around Key West in both the Atlantic and Gulf (always near shore/in sight of land) We love the little tub and although she is often the smallest sailboat in the marina, she gives us big pleasure.
