Pros:
Cons:

THE SCANMAR 33 WAS BUILT IN SWEDEN
IN THE MID EIGHTIES IT HAS A VERY GOOD REPUTATION IN THE UK AND EUROPE WHERE MOST ARE SAILED, IT SAILS VERY WELL AND WON QUITE A FEW
RACES AFTER IT WAS LAUNCHED.
THE HULL IS VERY WELL BUILT AND IS KNOWN TO BE BLISTER RESISTANT,IT WAS DESIGNED TO WITHSTAND BEING RUN
INTO ROCKS AT 6 KNOTS WTH NO STRUCTUAL DAMAGE.
THE INTERIOR IS TYPICAL MAHOGANY AS THE SWEDES LIKE TO DO AND IS VERY SPACIOUS FOR A 33' BOAT.
THE SAIL PLAN IS 3/4 RIGGED AND VERY EASY TO HANDLE ALL CONTROLS ARE LED AFT AND WINCHES ARE BY THE
HELMSMAN MAKING SINGLE HANDING VERY
EASY AS MOST OF MY SAILING HAS BEEN ALONE.
I CAN HIGHLY RECOMEND THIS BOAT IT IS WELL MADE SAILS LIKE A DREAM AND IS COMFORTABLE BELOW AND ON DECK.

Pros:
Cons:

As I write this update to my review below, we have now owned the Scanmar 33 for three seasons. Has my enthusiastic assessment of the boat changed? Yes, it's gotten even better. With my previous boats, the longer I owned them, the more shortcomings I discovered about them. The happy opposite applies to "Valkyrie" our Scanmar 33: the longer I own her the MORE enthusiastic I become.

We've sailed the Scanmar at least another 1,000 n.m. more than my previous report, and I continue to discover exceptional qualities: comfort, speed, convenience, logical design choices, and clever details that make cruising aboard her a pleasure.

Also, in August '04, she took SECOND place in her division in the 190 n.m. Around Long Island Regatta, proving her to be a TRUE performance cruiser.

The following is my previous review --

As of 8/02 we have owned the boat for only one year, but we've logged nearly 1,000 n.m. on her: Chesapeake, Atlantic, Long Island Sound, Buzzards Bay, misc. We owned a Tartan 3000, and a CS30 previously, and have chartered a dozen boats of numerous mfgrs from 28-48 feet.

The Scanmar (SCANdanavian MARine) ranks among the best boats we've been aboard, and has exceeded all our expectations.

Extremely strong, high-quality construction; excellent balance and tracking; light touch on the helm; smooth, comfortable motion in seas; very well laid-out and spacious cockpit with teak seats; secure companionway w/easy entry and exit; exceptional engine access.

Some details: Designed by Rolf Magnusson; built in Sweden; Class A Ocean Rated; awarded the Swedish Blue Seal (or Sign) requiring close monitoring during construction, and severe testing afterward. Exceeded test requirements.

Volvo 3-cyl FWC diesel; fractional rig (Isomat); Whitlock rack & pinion steering; full skeg hung rudder; superior rub rail; 6 opening ports; beautiful mahogany interior throughout; 3-cabin layout including full-width aft cabin, main saloon w/L-shaped galley, nav station, U-shaped dining area w/mahogany table; large v-berth. Interior is comfortable, spacious, and well-arranged. It's also beautiful.
