Our first sailboat; alot for the money; good coastal cruiser, but no passagemaker; stable & comfortable in 25 knots with 6 foot seas, except waves from the quarter require wrestling the tiller. Two 7 foot berths are nice for tall sailors; but boom is indeed at head injury level (use a preventer downwind), and headroom is only 5'10". Dodger adds much comfort on rainey days; small working jib requires 10 knots to be fun; 9.9 outboard powers well; cavernous storage under cockpit (two berths could fit under there I believe). Anchor locker is also huge; & the hull feels solid.
A single small AC heater (with bow berth doors closed, kept us cozy in 30 degree, 20 knot January weather when at dockside with shorepower. Two small heaters will keep the entire boat toasty inside. One of our units (under 40 bucks at Wal-Mart) has a thermostat to prevent extreme winter temperatures (although New Englanders might not think we even have winters in SC). We purchased her in August, and two fans were adequate at the time.
We're presently leading furling, vang and halyards into cockpit, & adding Raytheon ST4000 tiller autopilot plus Raynav 300 WAAS GPS, another battery, and outboard powered charger. (No; I don't work for Raytheon.) We're hoping the autopilot (rated for 16000 # displacement) will handle waves from the quarter in this 5400 pound sloop. I'll try to let you know how it does.
New bottom paint applied to hull with not a single blister. It's also a dry boat.
Also, I heard the Pearson brothers are back in business in Rhode Island; is this true?
Our goals are to cruise between Bald Head Island and Jacksonville; mostly the SC coast. So far we've sailed from Daufuskie Island to Seabrook.
Problems: tiller does have play so will follow Dan Phiefer's excellent web page advice when hauled next. Most notable, the headstay was frayed at the mast because the jib halyard was not kept taught, which allowed the headsail furler to torque the forestay. The cockpit drain hoses also needed replacing. I'd recomend sailmaker Tom Irby, and surveyor Neil Haynes to anybody near Charleston SC. Also notable, the ourboard prop, when powering in swells, often comes out of water and revs loudly. The iron keel grounds well and protects the rudder. The boat is a great value; it's maintenance and upgrades and slip rental that are expensive. Surveyor valued our sloop at 8000 without the above improvements; NADA & BUC book values range between 9K & 11K.
