Great trailerable boat for a family.Big cockpit and fun to sail . We added a spinnaker and trapeze to learn their use .

This boat design has crossed the North Sea (Frank Dye) as well as other large bodies of water. It is sailed as a one-design actively in Canada and Michigan (perhaps other places as well in the US). There is a website in England on the boat. She is a multi-chined boat with a large cockpit. Some folks use the boat to "camp-sail" as you can sleep on the cockpit floor. Tracks a good line at all sailpoints - I once snapped off the centerboard in 25 knots of breeze and never lost the groove! Centerboard is not weighted, but the beam and chines work well. Nice storage fore and aft. Good to teach you kids on how to sail well before moving up in size. Currently sail in Lake Michigan.

The Wayfarer is a great family boat/racer. It has some wood,
adding to its beauty. It carries a main, jib, and spinnaker. It
can be sailed, even raced, by one, two, or more. It is easily
trailerable. Used, they're around $2,000. I have been racing
mine on Lake Erie for five years. I would be happy to talk to
anyone with questions on the boat.

I like the Wayfarer. Very stable, fun for up to 6. Keep one thing in mind, although the boat is very competent, you are still in the water as instead of on the water. This means, like most 16 footers, it can be wet.
Very good entry level boat with alot of room to grow. They are not cheap, but provide a great value.
It is appropriate to think of the Wayfarer as the Sherman tank of sailing dinghys.

Abbott is the Canadian manufacturer of the Wayfarer in North America. The boats are well made. The fit and finish is well above the norm for daysailers being built by many of the well known mass producers of small sailboats.
Another secret about this boat is that it is FAST. Before you buy another performance daysailer, you might want to compare their Portsmouth DPN to the Wayfarers (91.7)! Your research will not find many daysailers in the 15-18 foot range that will keep up with you.
If you are looking for dry, performance daysailer that can cruise with a load, check out the Wayfarer.
