Fantastic and huge 42 footers that (don't tell Marina owners) measures 43'2''. This design is derived from the celebrated 473 but represents a much better value for the buck. Ours is equiped with in mast furler, high power winlass, 140% Genee, brand new High tork low RPM Volvo diesel as quiet as I ever experienced on a sail boat of this size.
Obtaining 8 knots on a 9 knots+ breeze on a close haul for a cruising boat is a treat. Too bad Beneteau North Carolina is not supporting their owners the way they should. Good thong dealers such as Marina Gosselin remain behnd their customers. Notice to 473 shoppers, take a close look at the 423 and outside the dual helm station that prevents anyone from using cockpit seats as sea berth, is more or less the same boat for 100k cheaper...hard to justify the expense. By the way, do choose the super dooper Raynav E80 display unit mounted right where it should be for easy navigation and reference at a glance. Platinum electronic charts are also something to talk about.
Sails really in all point of sails and like most Beneteau's, reverse is a real gamble whisle docking. Some will prefer the fully batten main sail which turns out to be the same price but once you've played with the in mast furler, you never go back.
This is our third Beneteau but beats the others by a land slide.

Very pleasant and capable cruiser. We opted for the inmast furler and the Volvo engine and both turned out to be great choices. In spite of less sail area, the in mast furler allows for lazy outings, safe reefing in a jiffy. The Volvo High torque, low RPM new generation is absolutely unbelievelby quiet and fast(over 9 knots under power). Fast hull, filled with clever storage space, losts of water/diesel for serious cruisers. This hull has less beam than of 393 allowing for a little more performance but remains roomy none the less. Do compare this 423 to the 473 and you'll be surprised by the commodities being almost the same. I prefer the single helm station as it leaves more room to lay down in the cockpit. The French model has the clever Goiot Wheel that can be turned to the side allowing easy access to the open transom.
Performance under sail are quite satisfactory in spite of the in mast furler, image with a fully batten main! We achieved 8 knots on a close haul of 9.5 knots of true wind, pretty decent.
It just leaves Beneteau and their less than glamorous after sales reputation although this is our third Beneteau. The other 2 were First, so this is our first "Oceanis" style boat. Its still called Oceanis in Europe.
All in all, this is the best of all boats we've tried. We tested the Bavaria and the Jeanneau 42DS but call me traditionnal, I like our 423.
Write me and I'll give you a full picture of this gem! Dont tell 473 owners, this is a better boat but awhole lot cheaper.

A comfortable good looking boat with some problems. The main one is electrolysis. I was eating my zincs quickly. The through hull to the shaft had serious electrolysis destruction and simply broke. Luckily I was on the boat and detected it immediately. When I replaced it, the metal was red and crumbled in my hand. I have found a stainless steel one that I am now using. The Beneteau "people" tell me that it was due to the marina I am in. The boats around me do not have a problem with electrolysis! I even put on two large solar panels onto the radar arch so I would not have to plug the boat in during the spring, sumer and early fall. This summer I replaced my zinc and then spent 1 month sailing around Vancouver Island, I parked my boat at the marina for a month and then dove to inspect the zinc... it was almost totally gone. I called the people who do the preparatory and maintenance work for the local Beneteau dealer. They immediately said that it was likely the marina I was in. I then took my boat to an independent group that hauled the boat and checked it out. The zinc was 90% gone (in 2 months) and there was some red discoloration on several of my through hulls. In his checking the electrical system he determined that there was a large voltage leak through the windlass. He took it apart and found that the conduit taking the wiring to the windlass was not only sealed onto the housing of the windlass, but that there was a sealant inside the conduit around the wires. This meant that whenever the windlass was used it would heat up but the air had nowhere to expand. The seal was then broken and salt water got into the wiring. This corrosion resulted in a voltage leak and destroyed the terminals. Lewmar has been good and repaired the windlass under waranty. Beneteau is now questioning the qualifications of the employees of the private company! I plan on diving down to check the zincs in another month to see if this has corrected the problem.

I have a '07 423. I love the boat. The only negative is a slight list to starboard. Is there any one else out there with the same problem. I do have a Gen Set To starboard but the boat was designed to carry this.

The 423 is a comfortable boat, both at anchor and under sail. Although no longer in production, I think the quality and popularity is evident by the fact that one rarely sees a 423 on the used market.
Ref. the slight list to starboard comment (w/ the genset): Some have towed extra anchor chain under the port settee as a counter balance. There's a good owner's chat link in Yahoo Groups, with a lot of wisdom.

I have a 2 cabin version with folding Volvo prop, Volvo D2-55 engine, genset, aircon, classic main and spinnaker. The boat is very quick for its size, and I have clocked up almost 200NM in 24 hours on a number of occasions. Great accomodation, but limited locker room for hanging lifejackets, waterproofs etc.
I also have a list to starboard with my almost permanently non-functional Fischer Panda genset in the starboard locker.
