Description: 1978 Newport 17. It weighs about 100 lbs, has a swing keel that drops down about 5' and drafts less than a foor with it up. Decent weekend cabin, though a little smaller than some other smallish cruisers because it has a really large cockpit. Easy to single hand, likes a lot of wind (bit of a dog in light air, but fun when it kicks up). All the info/stories I have found indicate that it is very difficult to tip all the way over (I found one owner's story where he tried and failed because he waanted to test righting it) and the few I found that said it went over all said it self righted. I have been in contact with one person who took one to the Bahamas and back. I don't plan to do that, but it isnice to know it seems pretty capable. the very large cockpit only has a single drain, so my fear in rough seas would be that it would stay swamped for a few minutes if any big waves ever broke in it. I paid $1200 for mine and that was with aa new keel and cable, new rudder and tiller, all dings in hull recently repaired, trailer recently regalvinized and with new axels and tires. I have only been out a few times so far, but I am pretty pleased with it. It trailers well behind a wimpy tow vehicle.
