Fourth Cal and a good one. Unsure about Pathfinder diesel, would like info. Tri-cabin version. A great sailing boat. Some leaks to fix.

A superb sailboat. A genuine thoroughbred. Still has plenty of spunk even though she is 17 years old! Great accomodations for a family.

Sloop rigged, aft cockpit. Aft stateroom with large V-berth. Strengths: Layout is comfortable (similar to many boats being manufactured today at many times the cost), 6' headroom, T-shaped cockpit, sails well under all conditions (heavy weather to light air). Weaknesses: No stall shower, deep draft (nearly 7' - although that's one reason it sails well). Great all-around boat for the cruiser!

Sloop, 6'8" draft, 2 cabin layout.
Ocean racer, adapatable as a cruiser, though draft is deep for the Chesapeake and Carib, and sails are large for short-handed sailing. Stiff, fast, points well to weather. Factory rudder leaks, weeps rust, typically has to be replaced by year 20. Minor leaks in through bolts, no other major problems in 7 years. Overall the best value at 39 feet on the market. Solid boat if well maintained.

A very sweet sailing boat--stiff, tracks well, well-behaved in boisterous conditions and quite fast. Layout below is great for cruising--both storage and livability; cockpit is a good size and sail controls are handy for the helmsperson (mainsheet access can be awkward). Pathfinder disel has been OK tho marinizing of some components has been problematic. Glasswork above/below ranges from excellent to occasionally shoddy. Sailed this boat to Mexico and cruised the Sea of Cortez with my wife and "Allegria" performed beautifully--plus, she's very pretty (well...my wife, too). Overall--a terrific boat!!

Second Cal. Lapworth knows his stuff! Excellent boat for the money! Cruised from West coast FLA to Chesapeake. Raced in Chesapeake. Great Sailing, Very comfortable below. Fast and Solid. When cruising, just the two of us. Easy to handle in all situations. If we invite another couple, roomy interior really pays off.Planning on extensive long-term cruising very soon.

Owned for 12 years, cruised for 4. Great sailing boat, but lacks storage space due to tanks in knees, not keel, and overall slender design. Also, this model (tri-cabin) lacked nav station; one was added in port side salon forward. Perkins 4-108 was a winner. Eventually up(down?)graded to larger, center cockpit boat losing performance, gaining comfort.

A wonderful boat that Bill Lapworth created bringing performance and cruisng comfort into one package. A classic design, my boat is 23 years young. With some investment, the CAL 39 can be a better purchase than a new boat. I highly recommend her. She had some inconsistencies in her deck glass work and as was the case in some of these boats, she had some soft spots on her cabin deck. I had mine cut out and reglassed but with many new upgrades, a paint job for her hull and deck and a new bottom, she is quite a head-turner! The VW Pathfinder engine is probably her weakest point but, in my case, she is like the Timex commercial -- she "keeps on tick'in!" She is fast and comfortable with lots of storage. The engine compartment, like most boats her age, is not spacious, but that is why God invented skinny people. Bob Peavey,

Pros:
|
Sailing performance; handsome design
|
|
Cons:
|
port side engine access on repowered Yanmar.
|
|
Another Lapworth winner. It is a true sailboat, designed to perform under a range of sailing conditions. Cruised the west coast of Mexico and the Sea of Cortez with my wife. The only problem encountered was access to the raw water impeller for the Yanmar 3-cylinder desiel (repowered in 2000). Otherwise the engine is clean and dependable. Citla is a joy to sail.

I have one of the last Cal-39s that was designed CJ Hunt Assoc and bulit at the O'Day plant before so many companies went under at the end of the 80s. Boat sails great with a cruiser DLR of 245 and sail area ratio of 17.7. Wing keel with 5'4" draft allow you to go almost everywhere and seems to have better performace in high wind. Easily sails with full sail at 20 knots wind with 15 degrees heel. Single aft head that is very roomly with a stand-up shower. Private aft berth with drawers and hanging locker and bed that is bigger than a queen. Huge ice box that makes it a challenge to get that last beer. Very roomly saloon with a fold down table both sides. Private V-Berth with drawers and hanging locker. Real Nav desk. Roomly cockpit that will hold 7+. Wide sidedecks, rod rigging and on and on. This is great boat for it's 39 feet. My only wish is that the 38 gal alumimun fuel tank was bigger, but that's just because I ran out once (my fault).
