1981 Cascade 23'

Author's Note:

I bought this boat in June, 1999. It's hull #6 of eight or nine ever built. I'm on a steep learning curve, but thought I would get something out here since I don't see it listed elsewhere. If you own a Cascade 23, please email me. I'd love to talk to you.

Overview:

Cascade boats have been made in Portland, Oregon since 1954. Cascade Yachts (formerly Yacht Constructors, Inc.) builds kit boats, so owners can finish them or have them completely finished by the company. Cascade's main claim to fame is a 100% fiber weave design, creating a relatively lightweight, "bulletproof" hull. No fillers or chopping guns are used. There were only 8 or 9 Cascade 23s built. I met Stu Whitcomb, Cascade vice president, who indicated the material and labor dollars invested in these boats were too much to recover at sale; the line was discontinued and the mold was sold to a firm in southern Oregon, if I recall.

Design Features:

I'll list this in bullet points and come back to clean it up later when I know more about the boat and have more time:

* The keel is actually a daggerboard weighing 700#

* She draws 5'10" (!) with the daggerboard down

* Her beam is 7'10" (I believe - will check specifications)

* She displaces around 2500 - 3000 # (will check on this, too)

* Very roomy v-berth and quarter berths

* Specifics of the interior from boat to boat doubtless vary, but this boat has a built-in… [more to come]

Strengths:

Need more time to play with her before I'm going to say anything.

Weaknesses:

Need more time to play with her before I'm going to say anything.

I'm a new member of sailnet and so can't PM yet. I'm trying to see if anyone knows anything more about the cascade 23. Were there really only a handful of these boats made? That may explain the lack of info on this boat.

Either of you had a chance to form an opinion on this boat. Hull #2 is for sale and I am looking into it.

I bought hull #1 last fall and I love it so far. I'm new to sailing so I cant compare how it performs with other boats.
