The CL16 is a fiberglass hull modeled after the Wayfarer. It has an unweighted centerboard, and can be launched easily in 8 inches of water. Very stable, with lots of storage space in the bow and the lazerette. Easy to rig as the mast pivots on a bolt just below the deck level. Jib, Genoa and Spinaker options. Can be rigged with trapeze. Excellent boat for sail camping. Can be sailed in small lakes or open water. Best with a crew of two, but can be single handed. Single handed sailing in brisk winds is best done on main alone. Four adults can sail in comfort, six in a pinch. Nice touches include teak thwart and seats, two teak rails alongside lazerette hatch. Seats can be removed so two people can sleep on the cabin sole. Can be rigged with a boom tent. Weaknesses include the need to monitor the centerboard pivot bolt tightness and the condition of the washers. The boat is also unforgiving in ham handed, high wind gybes. It has never gone over on me, but has provided some excitement when stupidity, 20 mph winds and turning while gybing are combined. All in all, this is a very "yachty" boat for a 16 foot dinghy.

I have owned my second CL16 for 8 years. It is an excellent family daysailer and can race competitively using the Portsmouth Yardstick handicap. It is the same design as the Wayfarer by Ian Proctor, but has a complete cockpit insert. I have never been able to flip it over, but I have swamped it occasionaly. The cockpit drainers work well. I have sailed this craft in 4 of the 5 Great Lakes, I haven't gotten to Lake Ontario with it yet, as well as several inland lakes in Michigan.

The Cl16 is a heavy but fun boat. With the ability to reef on the boom you can sail in almost any wind. I have sailed in waves up to Four feet on Lake Winipeg and the boat handled great.With the optional trapize you can hold the boat flat in most winds. The boat is very competative evnt thought there are very few where we are. We have had some racing success in an open fleet. I have found the folks at CL16 in Fort Erie Ontario to be very helpful whe I need parts and since the boat is still in production that is not a problem. The only real weak point is that the company did not put a lot of effort into the rudder and centerboard shapes, Basically a piece of ply wood rounded a little and then fiberglassed. I can,t help but think the boat would improve with a little more foil shape to the centerboard and rudder. I have had as many as seven people in the boat at one time but it was a bit tight. The boat handles well in both light and heavy air. Easy to launch since you need very little water , I never dip my hubs in even on a shallow launch. The drains work great and can clear out a full boat in about 5 minutes when under way. The boat is fairly easy to right but is slow to turn and with a lot of freeboard it is a bit of a challenge to get back into. You can find CL16 class races in Southern Ontario but I have not heard of them any where else.

I love my CL16. As the axiom goes..."the use a boat gets is inversely proportionate to it's length", a 16 footer gets me on the water regularly. I look out from my house and can tell if it's a kayaking day, a sailing day, or a windsurfing day, and react accordingly. No slip fees required. and since I am in Buffalo, NY, the manufacturer is only 20 minutes away. I'd like to add oar locks to mine and stow some oars, in case i get tired of waiting for the wind one day while I'm out, but it hasn't been an issue yet. I also want to do more camping in her.
