Sailing the first Dehler 39 in Australia, on Sydney Harbour with 15 - 20 knots on the nose, was a revelation in responsive, fast sailing. The Whitlock steering was razor sharp and matched the D 30's response. 15 knots to windward brought 8.5 knots boat speed, tacking through no more than 80 degrees. Acceleration was blistering out of the tack and the helm showed no vices I could feel; this with a boat on it's first outing with new sails.
The D 39's overall impression is of teutonic strength and thoroughness, no detail of build or design not impeccably addressed. For instance, on checking through hulls, wooden bungs were lashed to each. The tie rods for the chain plates were not only of larger diameter than necessary but slotted into u/v joints instead of normal fixed terminals.
The look of the boat is breathtaking. Above and below deck the influence of Bahaus design principles are evident. Halyards and lines, fot instance, were covered in a seek, but easily removed, deck panel. Below, the minimalist joinery would have done justice to a modernist apartment on Fifth Avenue. Comfortable and extremely well thought out, it was a refreshing change from the overwrought woodwork of other cruisers, and timeless in style.

But the main point is the girlwas an absolute pearler to sail. It is so well thought out that signle handing is no problem. Hard to beat!
