The Del Rey 21 was built by Blue Buoy Yachts in California. It is a light displacement, planing design that weighs 1200 pounds. Ballast is 400 pounds. It was also available as a keel boat. Spar sections are unusually heavy for a boat of this size. The cutter rig is unusaul for a boat of this size and makes it easy to reduce sail when necessary. The staysail stay can be quickly disconnected and lashed to the mast so a 150 percent genoa can be used and still tack properly. It is very fast, but somewhat tender because of the light displacement and large amount of sail area. The cockpit is 7 feet in length, longer than that of a Catalina 22, making it a great daysailer for 4-5 persons. On calm days, I have also had six on board with no difficulty. The foredeck is large for a boat of this size, providing amble space for sail handling or sunbathing. It has a vee berth and two quarter berths, but the vee berth is only suitable for children. Use of wood trim is minimal, with all railings and trim of stainless steel, so maintenance is minimal. For those moving up from a dinghy or catamaran, it is a great boat, and an inexpensive introduction to cruising. Del Rey built a wide range of sailboats, and I understand that this was their smallest cruising design. I would enjoy hearing from other Del Rey ownwers regardless of boatsize.
