This a wonderfully roomy cruiser / racer. It has an excellent turn of speed around the bouys and can also handle rough seas . Sailing characteristics are generally quite good. The deck layout and rig are well planned. Interior finish is above average with only minor imperfections I am very impressed by the liveability she has down below. My wife myself and two sons lived aboard a month this summer quite comfortably. She's a lot for the money.

The Ericson 38 has proven to be everything we wanted in a boat for Chesapeake Bay sailing/racing and offshore sailing.
In the Bay, it has sailed to its PHRF rating; in club racing she finished in the top 3 consistently. We have sailed her to Bermuda and to Long Island Sound in races, with heavy winds and seas. We never had a moment of concern - she is solid. Others spoke of leaks, water... we were dry.
Things to watch for: the shoal keel means she doesn't point as well as one would like. The engine, Universal Atomic 4, is a bit underpowered. We have no sign of blistering.

Great boat, good layout above decks, pleasing lines, sails well. Fin Keel aprox. 6 foot draft, points nicely, sails well on Jib alone.
Ours is a fresh water yacht and has problems with blistering. We plan to haul this winter and will update status after repairs are made.
This craft has been and is presently in charter fleet and stands up well to the wear and tear of renting.
We purchased her June 6 1997, well below the surveyors price of $46,000. primarly do to the blistered bottom.

I'm the second owner and I have totally rebuilt the boat for extended cruising. I have also found one MAJOR safety item that almost caused the boat to burn up from a very poorly done shore power wiring job. i would urge all owners to inspect the wiring that enters the nav station panel for "parallel clip connectors" on the black, green & white wires. I have also replaced the flooring because of rot and found the job very straight forward and not hard. Would be glad to give advice.

I have also installed a Marskeel bulb on the keel this winter and will add followup info after launch. We hope to improve the stiffness of the boat.
All in all this boat has been and absolute joy to sail and own.

Great turn of speed and durable. Our family of four race and cruise on the Gulf of Mexico (steep, choppy mix) with never a worry or concern. The boat performs well and stays dry. Ease of movement on the decks and a comfortable cockpit. Plan to depart this summer for an extended cruise. Hope to be in New Zealand with her in two years.

Great value, well built. Very thoughful interior layout but a bit short on locker space if one wants to livaboard. Tender and needs to reefed early, 15-16kts beating. Classic lines, good glass and interior finish, good ventilation, good fuel/water capacity. Fast in light air, good in heavy weather if reefed properly. Well balanced helm.

I have just purchased an 89 Ericson 38. After long review of quality performance cruisers, I think the Ericson 38 offers the perfect mix. Construction and joinery are top notch. Appealing lines not found in modern, high freeboard, wide aft beam boats. Fast cruiser with sea-kindly motion.

sails fast and looks good, great lines

Cons:

I bought mine (orig 83) in Cali and have been refitting her extensively, including plumb hoses in head, electronics and some wiring, refrig, added radar, new cushions and canvas and sails, new running rigging, new heat exchanger, and with all that done, I am still happy with this vessel. Sails like a much larger boat. Been in 35kts no problem, very dry and comfortable, and surprisingly fast in light air.

Pros:
|
Superior design, can do blue water and coastal. Very solid build. A timeless beauty.
|
|
Cons:
|
Can't think of any. The Bruce King design and layout were well ahead of their time. Far superior in most sea worthy respects than most modern flat bottom squared off RV styles.

1980 Erision. completely refurbished with all new wiring, Sterling hull and decks, Leisure furl, water maker, wind generator, etc. A bit heavy by todays standards but very sea worthy. With this hull design you heal to about 10-12 degrees at which point she digs in and moves. Very stable platform. Have sailed her steadly all day in winds of 26knts and it was a like a nice day outing. Cuts through the water even my wife loved it. Great accomodations. Separate shower and private aft berth are really nice. Best value for the used boat dollar and a real classic that is appreciated for its very solid construction. Plans are for longer offshore passages. Presently in Pacific Northwest.
