Built by Alsberg Bros. Boatworks, Santa Cruz, CA. Design Carl Schumacher. 116 built 1982 to 1986. I own hull 115. Light fast design (PHRF 132) with 276 sq. ft. sail area, 2600 lbs. displacement 1050 lbs. in keel. Extremely well built with light rugged construction. Sailed frequently in TransPac race. Nice mahogany joinerwork below with basic amenities. Limited headroom, four berths plus teak 'park benches' in main cabin. Designed for racing with 1050 lbs.of human ballast (5-6 crew). I've added a custom lead keel bulb weighing 200 lbs. since I often sail with only two. Well mannered under sail and doesn't load up helm when heeled. Will plane with chute up in 12 to 15 knots of wind. Easily sailed by two.

The Express 27 was one of the first sport boats. It is an ultralight(2450#)one design keelboat designed by Carl Schumacher and built by Alsberg Bros.in Santa Cruz. It is an exceptionally fast and strong boat built to sail safely in the rough waters off northern California. I have raced my boat hard since 1986 and have experienced NO problems with it, not even a stress crack in the gelcoat. It is absolutely the sweetest sailing boat I have ever sailed. Past class champions include luminaries such as John Kostecki, Jeff Madrigali, Dave Hodges and Wally Cross. It is the largest one design class on San Francisco Bay and one of the most active one design fleets on Lake St Clair in Detroit. A wealth of information on the boat can be found on the class website at www.express27.org/.
