Alden design, built in Japan. Traditional Cutter-Ketch with bowsprit and clipper bow. Slow in light airs, rock solid when the wind picks up. Full keel with attached rudder.

Pros: excellant sea-boat; easily handled by husband &wife
Cons:

We've owned "Pacific Voyager" for three years. We crossed from Hilo, Hawaii to Sitka, Alaska and down the "Inside Passage" to Campbell River, B.C., Canada. We've cruised in the area now for three summers and will be returning this year. In the 60 years I've been sailing, she's the best all-around vessel. She's rigged as a cutter ketch with a self-tending staysail, so she's easily balanced in any wind and sea conditions. As you would expect with the Alden pedigree, she sails very well - even in light air. We find the center cockpit to be very handy and safe for handling and manuvering and it makes for an incredible engine Room. Down below is set up for comfortable passage-making and accented with beautiful Japanese craftsmenship in teak.

Pros: Solid, Very Livable, Cruising Performance
Cons: IZUZU Diesel: solid engine BUT hard to get parts for

We are relatively new owners (Nov 2007) but I will share my views thus far. We put a new Yanmar 75 hp in her over the winter, mostly becuase parts are hard to het for the Izuzu 60. We have an aft cockpit version. The layout for us really works. Large cabin, tons of storage, tons of head room, solid teak in most places and where there is veneer it is 'thick'. We are extremely pleased with how she sails even in light air...we like to sail! In 12 knots of wind we can do 6.5 knots to windward. The hull is easily pushed through the water as you would expect of a John ALden design. In 15 knots and above 7 - 7.5 knots by GPS is easily reached. She seems to like 8 knots above 18knots of wind. I expect this is hull speed for this boat. She is a solid boat that is well worth considering and easily jusifies putting some money into if need be. We are preparing her to live on and to cruise on in 2-3 years time. Some may not like the amount of teak on deck...I am half in that camp. I expect to replace my hatches with aluminum ones so that will reduce some of the teak. I also will use starboard under winches, windlass etc..there goes some more. I will have enough left to keep the traditional look...which we do like. Took me a few weeks to get used to a full keel...I can now park her almost anywhere. Have yet to master backing up ...but have not practice much. I will update as we remove more systems and do more upgrades but thus far we do not have any major disappointments.
