Like you have heard, the Rasmus was built strong and performs well offshore. It is a simple boat, which helps it last so long. Full keel with lots of cutaway under the forefoot, rudder hung on keel, aft eadge of rudder even with transom. Strengths include excellence speed under sail or power (Volvo MD21A is a 70 horse engine), and it is very capable in bad weather offshore. Ten foot beam gives it a good range of positive stability. Weakness... old model, but likely to age well. Overall satisfaction: I'll not own another vessel, unless it is an HR352 (the next model).
Some people repower with smaller, high revving deisels. I think this is a mistake, because the strong Volvo, with its low compression, works in all conditions and lasts well. We gave ours a top overhaul after 20 years service, and it will likely go another 20 years. Maneuvers well around the dock, but requires some expertise (full keel).
Performs very well under sail. We find the most common mistake is to stall her when close hauled, but not hard on the wind, or on a beam reach. She wants to go, so you have to harden up to the apparent wind.
The Rasmus has so much bouyancy in the bow, she needs to be ballasted forward. Chain rode will do it; I store jerry cans of water under the vee-berth, dogged down tight.
We added a rub rail (use the full length of the cove stripe), hause holes forward and amidships, blocks under the stern cleats, two anchor rollers, ring bolt in the stem to lay on at anchor, circuit breakers, replaced hatches, replaced stove, new canvas pilot house.
We want to add a hard top, hydraulic auto pilot, and a 120 jib.
Sails we use include full battened main, 110 jib with one reef, storm jib and gennaker.

I´m very satisfied with my old Rasmus 35 (number 178). It gives you very much boat for the money. She is not so fast under sail but instead she is very safe. I do have som ideas about make here a better boat. Like to be in cantact with other owners to discuss ideas.

Great sea boat. We've made a round trip trans Atlantic crossing east-west and four rounds Caribbean to Maine/Nova Scotia. Don't much care for the after cabin as it ends up being a garage but otherwise it's very well designed. Especially like the windshield but I would like to find a hard top for it.

I'm very plesed with this boat,don't care for aft cabin it turns into a store room.It sails well, but not in light wind I took out the chart table and put refrigerator there repowered with a perkins m-35.Would like a hardtop,any commets would be welcomed.

I've been sailing on this boat for about 5 years now and have been very happy with her performance. Just recently we took a 5 month trip to bring her from the Great Lakes down to South Carolina. The boat handled well the entire way, under power or sailing. We only encountered weather three times during that trip but each time the boat handled whatever was thrown at her. I feel that the below deck she could be brought more to date. Sometimes it gets a little crowded in the main saloon. We have enclosed the cockpit with removable canvas and that relieves some of the overcrowding, making for a real nice place to dine and read. We also had the canvas made so the it can be used while sailing ... a wonderful thing in any kind of weather. Coming from a background of many open cockpits, I would now find it hard to live without an enclosed cockpit and hard dodger. The aft cabin is used mainaly for storage but I leave the starboard bunk as free as I can ... this makes a good place to sleep off watch and still be able to lend a hand when needed. The full keel has taken some getting used to when in the harbor but is well worth the extra security that it provides. Rasmus is the big sister of the Monsun; the boat that one guy, Kurt Björklund, took single-handed more than 3 times around the globe - do you need a better reference?!
If you feel that the Rasmus is too small, check out the Hallberg-Rassy 41; a boat very similar to both the Rasmus and the Monsun (same designer; Olle Enderlein).
