We have added a "Superfurl" roller furling to use with the 150 Genoa and it makes the boat easy to "one hand" in any weather. The boat is a dream to sail and very comfortable for up to 6 adults. I wish the cockpit was a bit bigger.

Absolutely marvelous boat. We bought it new in 1982 and
replaced it last fall with a Pearson 36. We have had practically no problems with the Helms or its steady, reliable 15hp Yanmar. It is great weekender; sails true and fast. Comfortable at anchor overnight. It's a boat that will do just about anything (within reason) you ask. Jack Helms built a quality boat. It's one of the better kept secrets at 27 feet. If our is any indication, regular routine attention maintains the bottom and hull in near new condition!

A sloop rig of good design and great sailing ability. Mine is like many Helms in that it is semi-custom. Has held up very well; even the oft maligned saildrive. Very simple systems that are easy to maintain. Lacks some of the flashy features seen on newer boats such as anchor locker. Hull and rig have not suffered much wear as they might be considered overbuilt. I single hand the boat in races and do OK. Standing headroom for 5'10", beam is very wide. Only the plastic hatches really suffer in comparison. Bottom has had only the most minor of blisters. I haul and clean each fall and I patch maybe two or three dime size blisters. Very good for any boat of this age. Overall, a good bargan in a boat this size.

Owned a Helms 27' for seven years. Sold her and bought an IP27. The Island Packet may be roomier but I sure miss the sailing ability of the Helms. I had minor blister problems (due to my neglect) but was impressed with overall quality of boat. Hatches did required replacing. Thick hull. Good bargain boat for those seeking it. Handled heavey seas off Florida coast with ease.Yanmar 15 never missed a beat even though salt water cooled. Water tank leaked if over filled (after 15 years). Did miss anchor locker. Bought her in 1991 and sold her in 1998(July)for same amount.

Pros:

Well built - sails great
|
|
Cons:
|
Cockpit a bit small with wheel steering

|
Great boat for the price. Lots of room/headroom below for a 27 foot boat, she has ample stowage and performs well under sail. Glad I purchased her.
