Pros:
Cons:

We have a Helms 30 sloopthat has had quite a bit of modification by previous owners.

In order to add a dodger, the traveler had to be moved to the top of the cabin causing difficulties with the adjustment of the traveler while underway.
It is sometimes hard to find infromation and parts for the 11 horse Universal.

It is a great boat though.

I have owned my Helms 30 for the past two years and am continuously making changes/modifications to make her sail more efficiently. This spring ('02) I added a profurhler, new doyle 150 Genoa, and new doyle main sail. I am changing the rigging to run lines into to cockpit. I am considering changing the tiller to a edson wheel. I am located on Lake Norman, North Carolina.

Sails well on all points and in all breeze. Takes Atlantic waves with ease. 12 hp Yanmar is worry-free (but maybe a little underpowered). Appealing lines. Good storage. Ample headroom. Comfortable cabin. Overall good design. I could not have chosen a better vessel for the price.

Great sailing boat. Good design by John Holmes, well executed by Jack Helms with few flaws. Very sound boat. Jack and I discussed several aspects and improvements before he passed away. I sucessfully raced my boat for 10 years. I will be glad to share my knowledge and experiences. Just email me.
