Hughes 38 Specifications:
-------------------------
Design commissioned by Hughes Boatworks Ltd in 1966
Designed by Sparkman & Stevens, New York, NY, USA in 1967 - design #1903
Manufactured by Hughes Boatworks Ltd., at Huron Park & Orangeville, Ontario, Canada from 1967 to 1982, and Northstar Yachts at Huron Park, Ontario, Canada from 1971 - 1976
Mark I: 1967 - 1969
Mark II: 1970 - 1971
Northstar 38 version produced by US Steel: 1971 - 1976
Mark III: 1977 - 1982
a "tallmast" (TM) version with a 4' higher mast was an option on Mark II & Mark III boats
All models used the same basic Sparkman & Stevens designed hull. Some early Mark I boats were built with end-boom sheeting (this version is incorrectly displayed on the owner's manual supplied with Mark III versions)... all the rest had mid-boom sheeting. The mark variations used different interior & deck configurations. The Northstar version was lighter (12,500 lb) than the Hughes versions, which weighed 14,000 lb. Hughes Mark I versions had the mast located in the saloon... later models had the mast located inside the head. All models had balsa cored decks and a mast stepped on a strong fibreglass "A" structure over the keel... no plywood cores were used. The mast was used as the air intake for the engine, which was located under the cabin sole. Masts, booms, and other main castings were designed and manufactured by Hughes. Hughes offered the boat both completely finished and as a kit. Several interior bunk configurations were optional... one or both saloon bunks could be built as either a pull-out double bunk, or a fold-up bunk bed. Early models were all fitted with a 30 hp Universal Atomic Four flathead gasoline marine engine with 2:1 reduction gear (model UJRD) mounted under the cabin sole... later models used either the Atomic Four or an optional 23 hp Volvo 2 cylinder diesel with a saildrive mounted under the front of the cockpit.
