A great single-hander with plenty of freeboard and standing headroom!... Sparkman designed, large cockpit, sleeps 5, galley kitchen to starboard, head in V-Berth, plenty of storage....bulletproof hull layup, but mast compression post in bilge needs reinforcing to avoid "oilcanning"...Tell me about yours?

While I had sailed before on other people's boats, this was my first boat. I think this is a great boat for the first time boat owner. This is a big volume boat for its length, with about 5'11" headroom, and comfortable for day and overnight trips. I found it to be relatively stiff and forgiving, and yet small enough that docking was easily accomplished by myself. This particular boat has a Yanmar diesel/saildrive with a fixed three blade prop, so getting home was never in issue. The single interior issue is that the door to the head is not full at the top. When I bought the boat 3 years ago the core in the deck was wet and rotted, almost a paste really around the base of the mast, and so a moisture meter test on the deck is highly recommended. The prices on these boats are relatively low because a number are kit boats, so the interiors need to be looked at carefully. Our is a factory interior and is comparable to other boats of that era. Overall, I think this is a great place to start, and depending upon your needs, this may be it. Having said that, we're moving up to a CS 30 and selling it to a first time boat owner and his family, who I think will do as well with it as we did.

Pros:
good solid boat, easy to single hand, plenty of room
Cons:
plenty of room for 1 or 2 but a little cramped anymore then that

I purchased a 1980 hughes 26 late last year and have spent weeks in a row on board, very easy to single hand and plenty of room for one. I have a 15hp omc saildrive with a fixed 3 blade propeller my only concern is for the exhaust while under motor power. Overall I am very happy with this craft and have minimal complaints, a great starter boat.
