Pros:
Cons:

We just purchased this Irwin 38 because we had another Irwin 38 that we lost in hurricane Bonnie in Aug.98 After seeing our boat craacked open like an egg from being repeatedly bashed against a rocky shore, we were so impressed with the hull construction that we decided to buy another one. Our old Irwin (1985) had a Perkins 4-108 our new one (1986) has a Yanmar 44, and much more equipment. We bought the new one for $68,500 in Sept 98. It has 4KW Kohler Gen, AC/Heat, refer, 2 meter ham radio, anchor windlass, and was owner maintained in perfect condition. we are the third owners.

Pros:
Cons:

Great design sails better than you would think.
Big boat for size. Great aft cabin.
Sea kindly in a heavy seaway. You feel safe.
Glass work not the best it could be. Instead of screws in salon and living area heavy use of nails. Not enough storage room below decks.

Pros:
Cons:

Excellent deck, strong rigging, and Harken Roller Furling works fine. We especially like the walk-around interior design and the interior volume. The centerboard broke, revealing that the interior was not properly glued together. The mast wiring was replaced due to corrosion of automotive style "Y" crimp connectors. Some blisters, repaired, and the hull was epoxied. Engine documentation very poor - I spent 3 hours trying to understand instructions for bleeding after running a tank dry. Excellent engine access. Access to clean out diesel and especially water tanks nonexistant. Orignal Merriman blocks for running lines are too light.
I am very satisfied for the price.

Pros:
Cons:

Previous owners had done a serious epoxy
vinylester blister repair. We love the interior walk around room. Boat sails well. While replacing aging plastic opening ports I found considerable wood rot around most of the ports. Epoxy saturation and putty sills should prevent any further wood damage around ports. We also found some deck core damage around hatches. Replacing wood and epoxy barrier should be a good solution for those problems. There is excellent hanging locker space in all cabins and the galley is well laid out.
