I've owned a 72 model about 4 yrs now. The longer I have her the better I like her. Roomy for her size, comfortable in a seaway and does pretty good in the local club races. Replaced the ruder stock and installed external chain plates. A 20hp yanmar powers her. I guess because of the shoal draft, she doesn't point very well. But the view is great from the center cockpit.

32.5 cc Ketch/cutter rerigged. Owned for 27 years. A little slow in light winds under 7 MPH. Sails best in 10 MPH to 15 mph and higher. Very roomy for its length. Made many changes to it over the years to improve its speed and comfort. A bowsprit was added so the forstay could be moved 3' further out, Then the working jib could be used as a staysail. There is an Irwin list on e-groupes that has other owners of the boat. Happy to answer any question.
Removed the atomic 4 and installed a 30 HP, M4-30 westerbeke diesel. This made an improvment like you can't believe. The diesel was a direct drop- in. Fun boat with a nice layout.. Have kepted up with improvements to interior,exterior and sail plain.Makes a good boat for 2 people for weekends and two week stays.This is the fixed draft 4' version. It is not a tender boat.
Added a swim platform made with S.S. tubing and teak, with boarding ladder on the stern, and a dodger with bimini. Up dated the refrigeration system from an a.c. dock side system to a hold over plate d.c. system.Also added a mizzen top stay sail.There is a 7' dink that hangs from davits but it's too small for two. Went to a 10'sailing dink on davits. Installed radar and gps, the radar was installed on the mizzen at the spreaders and the display can be used in two locations at the helm or at the nav. station. The gps is at the helm in a pod system.Found
that the davits are too low for the new dink, make new ones from 1" SS tubing that are higher off the stern. Updated the wind and boat speed inst. with raymarine st60 wind and boat speed.Added a boom gallows, with full cockpit enclosure for rain days. Replaced all the old plastic ports with new S.S.opening ports from New Found metals.Updating auto pilot this winter to a Raymarine 6000 & Echo pilot forward looking sounder.

Sloop rigged 32.5 centercockpit with rollerfurler jib. Easy to sail and can be sailed singlehanded without problem. Good visibility from centercockpit and is a nice dry ride. Not a tender boat and gets respectible speed of around 6 knots in moderate winds around 15 knots, and have hit 7 knots on the rare occasion. Can easily hit 5 knots in 8-10 mph winds. Points relatively well. Factory displacement is 13,000 lbs. and with water, fuel and supplies and gear am assuming she is around 14,000 underway. Makes for nice heavy feel.
I have the original 30 h.p. universal gas engine. Replaced the prop with a new Indigo prop and can attain 2300 rpm and about 6 knots under power. Engine is fairly easy to work on, however getting access to some of the engine areas is a bear due to the small engine compartment located midships under the cockpit. The engine is reliable however and no complaints.
We have a completely enclosed cockpit with an oversized bimini and zip in canvas w/ plastic window and also a complete set of netting zip ins. The previous owner pulled out the stove and replaced it with an AC/DC fridge. This is nice but I would recommend converting the icebox and keep the stove. We are now using an Origo alcohol stove. It is OK.
For it's size, it has a huge aft masterberth with a queen size berth. There is also a settee bench as well. The V-berth is typical and comfortable. The salon has the galley to port and dining table to starboard.
Really like the aft deck room and the forward deck room as well. She is comfortable, reliable and fun. Would definitely recommend this boat as it is a real sailing boat that sails well, but not a finely finished boat (with the excessive prices...). We live in SW Florida and the draft of 3'11" is perfect for the thin water around here. Happy to correspond with anyone interested in this boat.
