Description: Learn to sail & explore the coral reefs of Roatan on our sailboat (Roatan) Feb18-28

We have been exploring & filming the Bay Islands for the last year on our sailboat, guiding folks around the most remote islands, cayes and reefs. Our last trip here is Feb 18-28, 2013 and we have 2 spaces left aboard. It's a fully catered & guided trip around the beautiful Bay Islands of Honduras. The diving, snorkeling & scenery is spectacular as the reef here is part of the world's second largest coral reef system known as the Meso-American Barrier Reef. The coral gardens are exquisite, the life is infinitely varied and colorful, and the water is warm & crystal clear.

The S.V. Samphire is a fully equipped 52ft expedition schooner, outfitted for multi-day live-aboard expeditions. Run by skipper Paul Ross and underwater ecology filmmaker Twyla Roscovich, our expeditions focus on getting out of the touristy areas and giving people the experience of the wilder parts of the Honduran coastline. We anchor in the most remote areas to explore wildlife, coral gardens, and interesting islands. Trips are fully guided & customizable so we can design an expedition to suit your interests. You tell us what you are interested in & how much time you have and we can design a trip to circumnavigate some or all of the Bay Islands, visiting the best dive sites, marine ecological reserves, waterfalls & villages.

Our trips sizes are small, only 2-5 people, so the setting is intimate and personalized and each trip is unique. All meals & snacks are prepared onboard with the emphasis on delicious, local foods. We cook using local ingredients bought from the small villages we visit along the way (homemade coconut oil & coconut bread, fish from sustainable fisheries including speared lionfish, fruits & vegs). Mango, avocado, papaya smoothies cool you down on a hot day, and brownies warm up the evenings.

ACTIVITIES:

Snorkelling & SCUBA diving:

The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef is the largest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere and is a major dive destination for good reason. The coral gardens are exquisite, the life is infinitely varied and colorful, and the water is warm & crystal clear. Every day consists of a new, unique location to dive and snorkel. We try to give the most diverse range of snorkeling/diving experiences possible, by targeting different underwater terrains and ecosystems daily.

Hiking:

Some of the areas we visit have fantastic tropical forest sand jungle hiking with gorgeous waterfalls, hilltop views, and amazing flora.

Learn to Sail:

Paul is an avid sailing enthusiast and engaging sailing teacher. Since we sail as much as possible from location to location, guests get plenty of opportunity to hoist the sails, take the wheel, & learn safe mooring/anchoring & coral navigation techniques.

Local culture:

As we traverse the coastlines of Roatan, Barbareta, Guanaja, Cayos Cochinos and Utila, we stop along the way to visit local remote Garifuna fishing villages- each has it's own unique flavor. We shop for local foods and crafts and meet the people who produce them.

Great Food

We take serious pride in spoiling people while they are aboard Samphire -- in a healthy way!. The menu include fresh baked goodies daily, smoothies with local tropical fruits, fresh seafood, delicious home-cooked meals featuring local fare, freshly made desserts, and more Pina Coladas than you'll know what to do with!

Underwater filmmaking and marine ecology education:

We also produce underwater marine educational documentaries, so guests have the opportunity to experience the some of the filmmaking process. Twyla, who is a certified commercial diver & divemaster, guides each dive and also brings along her underwater cinematography gear to opportunistically shoot footage along the way. At the end of each day we review the footage shot during the dives and discuss the ecology of the species we've captured on film..

We have the ability to edit films onboard, so if guests are interested, they can have us shoot and edit a high definition, professional DVD of their underwater experience, highlighting their favorite species

Price is $200 per day per person, includes all diving, gear, park fees, meals, snacks, drinks and accommodation.
