Even with varnish, I believe it should only be done on the first few highly thinned coats. The problem with building it too quickly is it just won't dry properly, which could mean it won't last as long.
Best to do it right.
p.s. I'm just not a fan of Cetol anyway, especially the old orange stuff. It flakes off.
