It really depends on the prevailing conditions in your area. Around here the wind is typically light to moderate,so most masthead boats that are competitive use a full sized genoa as their primary sail. My racing #1 is good up to about 12kts true, as long as I have the meat on the rail to keep the boat flat. I don't suffer any loss in pointing ability when I use it, in fact I can out point most boats in my division.

You won't regret the extra power a #1 gives you in the light stuff!
