They can be very noisy, sail shape can be an issue as they are only supported at the mast top and above or below the boom. They are really just a vertical headsail furler. I have no idea what the major problems would be, as Stumble eludes to. For a racer, go fast to windward forget it. But for a cruiser with a cruising boat they do make sail handling easy and could extend the cruising years of the elderly, less mobile sailor.
