Re: Check out my sheet to tiller steering
The small line tied to the mainsheet is going across the cockpit and routed to the tiller on the windward side. It is attached to the tiller via a slip knot one of my rock climbing buddies showed me that works really well. You just slide the knot up to add more tension. In the pic the knot is about 3 inches away from the block. This is fine because you only get a couple inches pull from where I had it attached to the mainsheet.
In a gust the mainsheet loads up and pulls the little green line which s pulls the tiller to windward. This gives you enough weather helm to maintain course and not round up in gusts. After the gust the main depowers and eases the tiller to give less weather helm.
You are supposed to use bungees on the opposite side to pull the tiller to leeward in a lull so you don't fall off and jibe. The wind was strong enough yesterday where the boat still had weather helm in the lulls.
