The hour count doesn't matters nearly as much as how the engine was used during those hours.
For example, a boat run for 1 hour with no coolant will be in much worse shape than a well maintained 2500 hour engine.
What does matter is that it is a new unknown engine to you. as such, a mechanical survey is money well spent. A wet and dry compression test and general look-see of the hoses, lines, wiring, belts, mounts, valve train, oil condition, and a run under load will tel you a lot more than the hour meter and will be money well spent.
