I had a Heart 2500 on my boat when I bought it in 1998 which I thankfully got rid of years ago. It would NEVER charge 500AH of batteries at more than 68 amps using a 4.4kw Westerbeke genset. And to do that without tripping the charger, I had to run a hair-dryer to provide about 800 watts of resistive load. Repeated calls to Heart, where I told them about the problem. "You need an 8kw generator." "The book shows a picture of a 4.4kw genset driving the charger." "Huh..... well we changed to book."
The Heart is a highly inductive load with a very poor power factor. Often times the generator must have 3-4 times the capacity that you would think just from running the numbers.
