If the deal is legit and he wants the boat sold, he should have no trouble providing proof of ownership. If that pisses him off, then the deal is even more suspect to me.

I do agree with you that one should make sure the boat is owned by the apparent seller, just don't know if I would demand to see documents of proof before even walking aboard. I do understand why you would ask for that as you could be somewhat liable for damage if the boat were not their's and you were seen aboard by the real owner.
Luckily this seems to have been a legit deal, in appropriate condition for the price.
