Bonding shoudn't be an issue.
Just scuff sand the underside with 80 grit and bed in thickened epoxy.

Done carefully you will have a smooth solid surface. The only fairing will be at joints and edges. Way easier than dealing with a large flat surface.

The lesson from the Icarus story is not about human failing.
It is a lesson about the limitations of wax as an adhesive.
If you have an engineering problem solve it.
