If the battery had been operable and now has no fluid in it, there is something catastrophically wrong with it. Probably a crack. Dispose of it.
If it was never used, then presumably whomever gave you the mower installed it. Its been a long time since I've purchased a battery where you had to add your own acid/water mix. Old motorcycle batteries used to come that way. If this was the case, it may be salvageable, but why bother for what must be a $30 lawn and garden batt. Every time I used to do this, I would ruin something on the workbench or my clothing, when messing with the acid. They sell maintenance free lawn and garden batts. Way to go.
