There's an interesting point. The same thing applies to engine bore & stroke ratios - when they are the same it is also called a "square" engine and it seldom works well either.

I understand that sail plans where the area is equally split between main & jib ("square"?) also don't generally work well.

Any math wizards here who can explain this curiosity?
