As a shoal draft (3'6") full keel centerboard boat owner who races on a river (Hudson) I'd recommend you play with your center board angle a bit.
Sometimes that sideways skidding effect helps us beat out the fin keel boats we race against in a river that also has significant current.
Fin keel boats cannot raise or lower their keels but you can. You need to use this to your advantage when you can.
Hint: the center board has different effects at different angles of being lowered.

As others have suggested a crisp new(er) jib would probably help a lot.
