Double VS. Split Backstay
I need to replace the split backstay on my Catalina 22. I'm not planning to adjust tension regularly so I was considering two options:
1) Replacing the adjustable setup with a tang or shackle and doing two static wires on turnbuckles to the transom, or
2) Ditching the "split" concept all together and doing two separate backstays, meeting at the single clevis pin on the masthead (Catalina Direct: Masthead Casting - Flat Mast C-22
Does anyone have thoughts or suggestions on which way would be best? I've read that some will upgrade to two separate backstays for "Offshore" purposes. While I probably won't be doing that type of sailing, the additional redundancy would offer some piece of mind on Lake Michigan.
