Wow, that bad huh? I had no idea. We paid a guy $20/hr to fill, fair, and paint our decks along with doing our bottom. That's the cheapest boat labor I've seen, but I figured closer to $40 was average for that type of thing and $60 or so for more mechanical stuff.
Either way, point still stands. Do as much as you can yourself. It took me 2 hours to get our diesel tank out, at $60/hr that's $120 that you could save. If you add that up with things like running pipe, installing thru hulls, engine compartment cleaning, etc, you could probably cut costs pretty significantly.
