Bruce Van Sant's book has it right. When I did it North to South we left in winds a bit stronger than he recommends (can't remember what exactly), but all was well except we were going faster (45' cat) so arrived early at the NW end of Puerto Rico so got kicked by some serious thunder storms, resulting in sail/boat damage which resulted in turning around.
My then lady had done the trip several times and the only thing she disagreed with Bruce about was that she kept even farther away from the hourglass shoals.
In hind sight would have waited for more benign conditions and taken our boat speed into account by leaving a bit later in the day.
