On the Cal 29 for example if we are talking close hauled upwind the first 5.5 knots comes pretty easy perhaps 8 to 10 knots of wind

As the wind builds for that last bit of speed which might be 6 knots so does the sea-state and now you have to start pushing through progressively bigger waves which makes it harder and harder to stay fast

There are various reaching angles that the Cal likes when i crack off and reach or head downwind were it is real easy to reach 7 knots + with the occasional 8.1 knot surge which takes some pretty big air certainly above 20 knots
