Why not just experiment with different fuels until you find one you like? A lot of people use briquettes. Hardwood burns hotter per volume, and so does regular charcoal. Anthracite coal will probably burn through your firebox. Soft coal is an awful mess and doesn't enough heat for the trouble.
Try several and see which you like.
If you burn wood, watch for hot embers coming out the flue. You may want to add a 1/4 inch screen to the top.
