The Newcastle park anchorage is now primarily a mooring field, at a reasonable $12/night, IIRC.. it gets a bit busy but actually is better now because fewer people drag. Outside of Mark bay you can still anchor as long as you avoid the aircraft fairways..

I think that BWindrope is overstating things a bit, it's busy but Newcastle Island is such a delightful place it's worth it. We generally go to the dock - $2/meter LOA per night and good access to facilities. No power or water on the dock, though.

Across the bay at Nanaimo harbour you can get 3 hours courtesy moorage on the outside floats, and shopping is a short walk from the marina, including a pretty good chandlery.
