Took the Buquebus ferry to Uruguay from Buenos Aires once several years ago. Great trip and great steak!

The classes you want to take are a great start.
One way to learn to sail more is on other people's boats. You can learn a lot crewing on racing sailboats so if there is anywhere near you where people race there should be an opportunity to crew. Your classes should help you gain acceptance as a potential crew member.
The more different kinds of boats you can crew on the better an idea you will have of what kind of boat you might like to buy.
