While Jethotog's list may seem umm thorough for a day sail on a lake, it is still worth reading and considering alot of it.
You say you are a new sailor and this is your first time as a skipper. I would suggest start building good habits NOW.
Thanks Chall, this list is a direct result of having rented 22-25 foot boats for many years and getting comfortable showing up and "kicking the tires and lighting the fires". This same technique did not cut it when I was taking out boats above 30 feet where I was the only sailor onboard, thus the thorough list to cover all contingencies. Also when I signed for the boat I was responsible for a lot more equipment. I did not want to be responsible for a winch handle someone else dropped overboard.
If nothing else Garret you should at least discuss with your crew what to do if you fall overboard.
