I haven't replace my 1988 Groko on my 34 yet but that is on my list to do.
However from reading many posts, mostly on this forum I've come to believe that rebuilding the Groco does not have reliable results. Primarily for reasons you have mentioned. Cylinder scoring. IMHO the only reliable method is going to be to purchase new from Groco. Hate spending the bucks but I figure if the previous Groco made it 25 years than a new one is worth while. I used the same reasoning with my Adler-Barbour refrigeration compressor. Besides it'll only hurt for a week or so.
U don't want it to hurt again a year from now when you have to rebuild your rebuilt.
