Polarity of LED lights

Hi all,

Just rewired the mast. Changed all lights to LED's. On the instructions, and in "This Old Boat", they mention making sure the polarity is correct when wiring. I do have a new digital multimeter. However, when checking, I don't notice any difference when reversing the meter prongs to the red and black wires of the new lights. Supposedly, you get a (minus) - if it's backwards. Should I just go ahead and connect the lights, red/hot, black/ground and try them briefly (the mast will be down). Expensive lights, don't want to burn them out needlessly.

Thanks!
