The lazy jacks (lines) help support the stack pack, so yes they are needed. I don't like the stack pack, but do like the lazy jacks. You will need to slack the lazy jack lines when you raise the sail...ease the main sheet, raise the topping lift, hoist the main, ease the topping lift adjust the mainsheet etc.
